Growin’ With Grandpa Joe
Thirteen excited 5th grade students at Krug Elementary School participated in a potted plant after-school art project led by Triple Threat volunteers on Wednesday, April 22. The project, “Growin’ With Grandpa Joe,” was developed and led by volunteer Joe Dispensa, a.k.a. “Grandpa Joe.” For two hours, students creatively used paint markers to custom design ceramic pots and then plant African Violets inside once dry. Principal Twila Garza was so enthused about the project that she personally decided to join the fun. Designing her own pot, she talked, shared and laughed with student artists as they worked together on their projects. Triple Threat volunteers provided guidance, encouragement and assistance for students. One first time volunteer, rather unsure at the outset, enjoyed the experience so much he said he’ll be back to help with future programs.
At the session end, smiling students walked out the door wearing new Triple Threat t-shirts donated by sponsor Nike. As for the finished product? The brightly decorated potted plants were displayed in the front office for the rest of the week for the entire school to enjoy. Afterward, proud artists brought their projects home.
