A Day to Remember

A summer Creative Arts Workshop and lunch for Aurora students, led by Medallion Press artists and writers, was held June 17. At 10:00am Triple Threat boarded 21 student residents from Aurora urban housing communities on a bus to transport them to the location in St. Charles.

The workshop timing was concurrent with the annual Miss Illinois pageant. The Miss Illinois Scholarship Association has adopted Triple Threat as their charitable platform for community volunteerism in 2009. Miss Illinois pageant contestants would join students for lunch and to assist in workshops.

Upon student arrival the day’s planned activities were explained and t-shirts distributed.  Vice President Adam Mock then toured the group through the Medallion Press offices where students learned the daily operations and roles within a publishing company.

Returning to the session room, students and Miss Illinois contestants enjoyed a boxed lunch together provided by Medallion Press. Smiles, friendly chatter and laughter filled the room as shyness faded and hungry students devoured their lunches. A fun trivia quiz to acquaint students with contestants, hosts and Triple Threat all rounded out the lunchtime fun.

Students were divided into two groups afterward to learn to sketch animated characters and the basics of short story writing. Several Miss contestants even brought related gifts for students’ personal use including journals, art supplies, paper and even signed autographs upon request!

After fond good-byes to contestants, appreciation to Medallion and a group photo, students boarded the bus to return home. With gifts, autographs and completed art projects in hand, they returned with unique memories, stories to share and a vision of new possibilities.
