Birrp: A bike repair program, not a belch

What’s better than a new bike?

How about a bike that youth make with their own two hands.

That’s the concept of Birrp, also known as Triple Threat’s Bicycle Repair Program. Donated bikes make their way to the Triple Threat warehouse. Some of them are slightly used, while others don visible wear.

An eight-week program teaches Aurora youth the basics of bike repair. Kids from around the community tear apart the old bikes , give them a new paint job, then put them back together with their own style and flare from wheel to handlebar.

It’s more than a bike, said Nate Miller, who is the Triple Threat Arts Director who runs the program. It’s about taking ownership and building character.

“It teaches the kids not just how to build bikes, but it builds their respect and character,” Miller said. “It gives them a chance to have a bike. A bike they can call their own.”
